Community: Connection, Support, Accountability
This Sunday, we continue in 1 Peter 2:4-10, where Peter compares the community of believers to a “spiritual dwelling,” built of “living stones” who are all drawn to Christ, who is the “precious cornerstone.” Sunday afternoon, we will have the opportunity to enjoy the community of believers here at Christ Harbor as we share food, fun, and fellowship at our Food Truck event from 4 to 6pm. This is also an opportunity for you to invite someone else to experience what it might be like to be a part of the Christ Harbor community. We firmly believe that “what you win people with is what you win them to,” meaning that if people are drawn to your church because of entertainment, they will always demand to be entertained. So, how is our Food Truck event different?
This event will be fun; it will have games, food, and music. But that’s not the draw, and that’s not the point. What we are offering is, well, YOU. Sunday is primarily for us, Christ Harbor, to be together in community, but it’s also an invitation for those you know to imagine what it might be like if they were a part of this community. Entertainment, events, and games may offer a point of connection, but only people can provide support and accountability. It takes all three of these things together to build true Christian Community. Wait, accountability? Who wants that? Why is that a good thing? Well, the answer is “everyone,” and “Because it builds stability and significance in our lives.”
Accountability is one of the most powerful expressions of godly love we can give one another. That sounds counterintuitive, but it’s actually not; it’s just countercultural. Accountability prevents harm, points to life-giving truth, and demonstrates true care. Jesus was the ultimate countercultural person. Sunday morning, we’ll talk more about how we can love people like Jesus in countercultural ways. I hope you’ll make it a priority to be there.
